Promises, Promises, Part I
Jesus makes a lot of identity-statements in the Gospel of John. The latest being the most famous: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Fascinatingly, Jesus immediately moves into making promises to His disciples. The first promise we saw last week: “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.” It is because Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah of God, that Jesus can make such astounding promises to His disciples. This is the consequential framework that the Apostle John intends for you, the reader, to follow and understand. Essentially, Jesus can promise what He promises because Jesus is who He is (see John 20:30-31). Today, we will consider the second and third promise Jesus makes – the promise of life and spiritual union. We are excited that you are here and for our exploration of God’s Word together.
