Promises, Promises, Part II

December 15, 2013

Jesus makes a lot of identity-statements in the Gospel of John.  The latest being the most famous:  “I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).  Last week we considered how Jesus’ promises were based on His authority or power.  Only Jesus could promise life (John 14:18-19) because He is the author of life.  Only Jesus could make the promise of an effectual union (John 14:20-24) because it is His Spirit that works in us to produce a love for obeying Jesus, our Lord and Savior. As stated last week, this is the consequential framework that the Apostle John intends for the reader to follow and understand. Today, we will consider the fourth, fifth and sixth promise Jesus makes – the promise of the Holy Spirit (reiterated), the promise of peace, and the promise to return (reiterated). We are excited that you are here today for our adventure in God’s Word together.
